I have dreamed plots before. The problem, I find, is that dream narrative makes absolutely no sense. Characters merge or change into figures from your childhood, location switches in the blink of an eye and sometimes giant elephant wasps appear for no good reason at all.

Sometimes, deciphering a dream plot can be harder than starting from scratch!

I agree, when you have a story idea, go ahead , develop it, finish it , so you move on, with a clean slate to a new idea or story.

It's great that you're writing the screenplay for your own novel. I would want to do that too--not only for the sheer joy of screenplays, but also because I've seen how things get mangled when you entrust the screenplay to someone else (I'll never forget Eragon). Now you can preserve your creative vision in two vastly different mediums. Good luck! :D

I'm intrigued by Dramatica. Perhaps I'll save up for it...it really does sound interesting. I, too, used to be a pantser, but not anymore, although I still have some of those tendencies. I wrote two novels by the seat of my pants and I wish I had outlined them beforehand. One is rubbish, and the other needs an overhaul.

I'll have to see if Dramatica offers a free trial. I could try outlining my novel for free. :)

I know exactly what you mean. I'm "feeling" like I'm close to the end with this one. We'll see what the reviewers say!

Hi! I don't think any of us will ever be able to look at our own work and come up with the word "perfect." We serve as our worst critics, even when looking at the best of our writing.

Guess the secret is knowing when to stop changing things. In my work as an editor, I've seen a lot of writers who finally get the manuscript to an optimal point, but then they continue to revise and end up going backwards. I've done the same thing too with a number of my stories.

So we need to be able to recognize when we've maximized a particular piece of writing and to know that, if we step over one more revision line, we'll only mess things up. Sometimes we need someone else, like a professional editor, to tell us when to stop, or we might never reach the end.

Amen! Getting our writing right is so much more important than getting it fast. Good things--and dreams fulfilled--stand a mucb better chance of becoming reality if we take the required time to create the highest quality product possible (not just the writing but the editing as well).

I'm so happy to hear that you agree. And isn't the peace of mind wonderful when the pressure shifts off of hurrying and onto the craft?
